PLACE Action Days

Every last Saturday of the month is a great way to plug-in. We do garden, kitchen and general build out projects in need of helping hands as well as skilled ones in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, tiling, or otherwise. EMAIL US: info@aplaceforsustainableliving.org

POD Support Needs

We are always looking for support at PLACE; Whether it’s help building out our infrastructure, gardening, or setting up for events and classes.

PLACE Pods are smaller organizing groups with special functions of PLACE. They include the following: Education (Youth & Adults), Special Programs (Partnerships, neighborhood activism, placemaking), Admin (systems development, organizing & coordinating), BUZZ (Marketing Communications), Regenerative Design, Events, Facilities, Fundraising, Urban Gardening, Hearth, & Volunteer Coordinating. Tech and Social Media Support

Knowledge of WordPress (currently what we are using for our website) or other web applications that may be more current, efficient and robust. If you have skills to share with Social Media, we’d love to hear from you.

Garden Support

Facilities Steward

Searching for a handy person to help develop our growing urban sustainability education organization. Our space includes the Makery, a community art space, the Fab Lab, the shop for appropriate technology and Coworking space for individuals or grassroots organizations needing to be in a co-working environment.

Some projects currently underway include a passive solar heating, rooftop garden, greenhouse, site-wide grey water and rainwater irrigation, and a solar/electric hot water system. You need not be an expert in these areas but a good knowledge of them and willingness to learn is a must. A good attitude and can play a role in doing outreach for expert skilled volunteers.

Candidate should have some basic construction/fabrication/repair experience and support our community service mission.

Some duties include:
• Help manage build out of projects on site (individually, small teams & big groups)
• Maintain organization of our building materials
• Maintain organization of our Fab Lab shop
• Facilitate maintenance of yard space
• Organize recycling runs and zero waste efforts
• Organize Action Days for our build outs and finish projects that have been started
• Work with Admin to get volunteers for the work days

$600 per month rent + utilities.

The role requires 8-10 volunteer hours per week. In addition, the Wednesday night weekly PLACE meetings is required; Pod meetings and regular weekly chores are expected as well. All Stewards volunteer for at least one Action Day work day and host at least one event or class per month.

Administrative Steward

We are seeking someone who has good communication, organizational, managerial, and writing skills. Someone who is also kind and courteous and can interact positively with other personnel and the public. Someone who can also work well independently and in groups/collaboratively. This person has the ability to prioritize tasks, can come up with creative solutions to issues, has experience in systems development, event and workshop coordination, volunteer coordination, and has familiarity with google docs and is more than comfortable with computers. Bonus skills would include: web development and experience with social media.

Responsibilities:

  • PLACE Meeting Coordination
      • Creates and solicits agenda items & sends out reminders
      • Facilitates Weekly Admin Meetings
      • Help Develop or improve protocol if not already established
  • Manage
    • Keep up with signup sheets by entering the data once or twice weekly
    • Answer PLACE emails inquiries; Forwards messages to relevant parties
    • Sort emails to appropriate folders
    • List-serve Management
    • Gathers information for our Newsletter
    • Manages and updates announcement list (includes notifying community of needs for workdays)
    • Ensure that the online calendar and community board is up-to-date
    • Manage and sort snail mail that comes in
  • Communications
    • Communicates with Placeholders and other Stewards directly on relevant matters and tasks needed
    • Coordinates with Web Developer/BUZZ to deliver content for website event updates, development of press/event releases and dissemination to various list-serves, facebook & press
    • Bonus: NVC or conflict resolution trainings

Additional Support as needed:

  • Grant writing experience a bonus
  • Be familiar with and maintain the running list of volunteer tasks on-site
  • PLACE Event/Education Support
    • Prepares space for events, rentals (office & hourly), classes
    • Identify needs for different events and workshops and help with set-up
    • Ensure that there is a point-person or House Manager for each event
    • Sometimes be the Greeter for workdays and Events
  • Coordinate outreach at events outside of PLACE and prepare materials for tabling
  • Create and manage central repository to store data (files, images, video, etc)
  • Develop and upkeep Operational Manual (Policies, Procedures & Decisions made)

Garden Steward

PLACE for Sustainable Living is seeking an experienced gardener with the ability to manage and care for the gardens onsite. The GC will promote plant and soil health, keep all physical elements of the garden site in good repair, ensure visitor safety, and provide education to the public about site work in progress and upcoming work parties. This position is an opportunity to support the mission of PLACE by expanding the gardens and promoting permaculture and food forestry in the East Bay!

Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintain a watering schedule and providing a system for others to plug-in easily when necessary.
• Manages and maintains gardens, greenhouse and develops a nursery (more specific details will be communicated by Garden Lead)
• Helps create various urban gardening demonstrations (i.e. container and vertical gardens)
• Installs and maintains irrigation
• Secures donations for garden needs and maintains the “Wish List” for the garden (i.e. seeds, plants, tools, woodchips, etc)
• Works with Volunteer Coordinator to organize, coordinate, and manage volunteer recruitment for gardening help and community work days
• Have reports, updates, and proposals as is appropriate at our weekly scheduled meetings
• Communicates with other stewards and members directly

Looking for

Education Steward

We, PLACE for Sustainable Living, are currently interviewing for an experienced Education Steward (work on site) or Education Coordinator (work offsite) to manage, plan, and promote classes on permaculture, herbalism, DIY living, and homesteading skills. The ES or EC must be detail-oriented and able to manage logistics and communications for multiple projects while meeting critical project deadlines. This position is an opportunity to support our mission as an on sight educational center on sustainability and resilience. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Recruits and manages teachers
• Works with teachers to fill out Class Proposal Form, if needed
• Post events and set up tickets on website (or works with BUZZ Pod on this)
• Extremely important to maintain consistent and prompt communication with our teachers
• Manage registration correspondences with students
• Hosts a bi-annual teacher orientation for new teachers
• Maintains updated contact records and liability waivers for all teachers and students
• Tracks class income and sends class evaluation survey to all students
• Develops co-promotional arrangements and community partnerships with other groups and nonprofits
• Maintains current teacher files and paperwork
• Assists students with registration questions and issues
• Manages class promotion and ensures adequate promotion to fill classes
• Evaluates prospective class submissions and follows up as needed
• Attend weekly meetings
• Performs other duties as may be necessary

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Hearth Steward

PLACE for Sustainable Living is seeking an experienced cook/chef/foodie with the ability to manage our onsite kitchen space. The Hearth Steward (HS) will maintain a healthy, clean, and loving foundation to the Hearth that is our PLACE Kitchen. Design, develop and implement a healthy sustainable Kitchen that will function for stewards, public classes and events, as well as incubation of cottage food industries and community building ideas.

The HS role requires 10 minimum volunteer hours per week. In addition, the HS will attend the Wednesday night weekly PLACE meetings, Hearth Pod meetings and perform regular weekly chores and duties. All Stewards volunteer for our monthly Action Day (last Saturday of the month).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instill Hearth cleanliness and maintenance by all stewards and guests
  • Coordinate with the Garden Steward for food grown onsite
  • Cook or coordinate food for our Action Days (last Saturday of the month) and Events when needed and when possible
  • Lead Hearth Pod meetings to generate ideas for Kitchen activity, designs, workshops, and Action Day projects
  • Ensure that there is training/orientation of the Kitchen to 3rd party use; this requires close communication with Education and Events Pods
  • Develop a Kitchen Use Certification Training for all Stewards and Groups intending to use the Kitchen for classes, events or cooking
  • Maintain the Hearth Wish List and Hearth Project Goals/Progress (google doc)
  • Recruit and keep an ongoing database of cooks, chefs, foodies who could be called on to host food for PLACE events; includes where to pick up donations
  • Recruit teachers with Education Pod for Hearth workshops (ie kombucha, tempeh, kimchi etc)
  • Maintain and establish farmer’s market and local donation relationships
  • Make proposals for any major changes to the kitchen and it’s systems currently in place
  • Works with Admin/Buzz to generate necessary signage for Kitchen Guidelines

INTERNAL

    • Research best bulk food opportunities
    • Propose kitchen shared meals
    • Develop and maintain PLACE Recipe book; see Bulk Staples below
    • Monitor inventory upkeep of communal food for freshness, etc.
    • Make sure people’s food needs are met and that ordering reflects everyone’s health needs as best as possible
    • Maintain weekly and monthly shopping list

BONUS

    • Bulk Staples Production of: non-dairy milks, nut butters, granola, kefir yogurt etc. and teach to stewards – part of the recipe book; hold a workshop
    • Develop and maintain a revenue and budget plan for the Hearth (skillset in this a bonus)
    • Develop the PLACE Sustainable Kitchen Practice manual and implement

Event Steward (filled)

The PLACE for Sustainable Living, is seeking an experienced event planner with the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders and community partners. The Event Coordinator must be detailed oriented and mindful of critical production deadlines, multiple priorities and communications. This position is an opportunity to support the mission of PLACE by producing amazing events that will leave people inspired, build community and are fun!

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiates and plans events at PLACE, including a minimum of one large fundraising gathering per month (eg. skillshare, open-mic, hoe down, bike-in movie, music event)
  • Works with Volunteer Coordinator to organize, coordinate, and manage volunteer recruitment for event production and outreach in collaboration with Volunteer Coordinator
  • Be point person for outside event producers/space rental
  • Develop partnerships, when appropriate for event production
  • Develops and implements marketing plan for events
  • Manages multiple priorities and work effectively under tight deadlines
  • Manages calendars to include the coordination of meetings and works with education coordinator on calendar scheduling
  • Attend weekly meetings and/or send report/update
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Tech Coordinator

PLACE for Sustainable Living is seeking an experienced technologist with the ability to manage and care for the tech infrastructure on and offsite (eg web). The TC will promote ease of tech, keep all physical elements of the tech infrastructure in good repair, ensure visitor access that doesn’t impair PLACE members access, and provide education to the public about site work in progress and upcoming work parties. The infrastructure created will help with intake and communication with volunteers and any and all other placeholders.  Additionally this position will engage with the internal and neighborhood community to help facilitate greater community building. This position is an opportunity to support the mission of PLACE by expanding the tech and community infrastructures, which will be used in promoting permaculture globally!

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides a system for others to plug-in easily to all systems when necessary.
  • Manages and maintains sound, projector, internet, website and all other tech equipment, including overseeing security infrastructure, backups, etc.
  • Secures equipment donations whenever possible and maintains respective “Wish Lists”
  • Works with Volunteer Coordinator to organize, coordinate, and manage volunteer recruitment using email list, etc.
  • Attend weekly PLACE meetings (Wednesday nights) and Tech Pod meetings (can be regular weekly, bi-weekly or as nec.)
  • Have reports, updates, and proposals as is appropriate at our weekly scheduled meetings
  • Manages website, newsletter dissemination, any and all email distribution lists
  • Communicates with other stewards and members directly

Volunteer Coordinator

The PLACE for Sustainable Living, is seeking an experienced volunteer coordinator with the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders and community partners. The Volunteer Coordinator must be detail-oriented and able to manage logistics and communications for multiple projects while meeting critical project deadlines. This position is an opportunity to support the mission of PLACE by developing our volunteer base to help keep out project running!

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits and manages volunteers
  • Manage volunteer correspondence
  • Develops a training program for volunteers
  • Maintains updated contact records and liability waivers for all volunteers
  • Tracks volunteer outcomes and generates reports on volunteer hours, projects completed, and other program outcomes
  • Recommends and develops ongoing use for utilization of volunteers
  • Initiates and plans one-time volunteer events (eg. PLACE and community work days)
  • Creates and writes position descriptions for ongoing volunteer opportunities
  • Develops a volunteer recognition program
  • Staffs volunteer events and takes responsibility for set up and clean up
  • Works with Event Coordinator to create roles for volunteers based on needs for events
